Mayor Urges Restraint

Jena, La. ---It has come to my attention today that in a decision in juvenile court, Mychal Bell's juvenile probation was revoked and he was returned to a juvenile facility to serve out his sentence.

The government of the Town of Jena has no jurisdiction in this matter. However, due to the intense interest worldwide over the case now known as the Jena 6, I thought it important to comment.

As Mayor of the Town of Jena I want to say that we respect the decision of a court of proper authority and do not want to interfere with due process. Moreover, we are not in the business of second guessing the ruling of the judge in this matter.

Having said that, I recognize that some may disagree with the court's decision. Notwithstanding, I appeal to all people to practice restraint and allow the justice system to work.

We appreciate all concerned citizens around the country who have expressed opinions on the Jena controversy in a peaceful and helpful manner. We hope that any expressions of opinion be done in a manner that does not prevent the town from going about its day-to-day business. Above all, we urge restraint and respect for the rights of others.
